Press Conference on June 9 Announces Peoples' Self-Help Housing Award
of NeighborWorks Charter
The public is invited to attend a press conference on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. that will announce that Peoples' Self-Help Housing (PSHH) has been awarded a charter by the prestigious NeighborWorks America organization. The event will be held Peoples' San Luis Obispo headquarters located at 3533 Empleo Street during national NeighborWorks Week June 4-11, 2011.
Speaking at the ceremony will be PSHH Executive Director Jeanette Duncan, U.S. Congresswoman Lois Capps, and representatives of NeighborWorks.
The event is organized in part by the NeighborWorks Pacific Division and NeighborWorks America.
Peoples' Self-Help Housing will be joining the 235-member NeighborWorks America organization, the country's preeminent leader in affordable housing and community development. Only 17 organizations are chartered in California.
NeighborWorks and Peoples' share similar missions: working to create opportunities for lower-income people to live in affordable homes in safe, sustainable neighborhoods that are healthy places for families to grow.
Founded in 1970, Peoples' Self-Help Housing has developed 1,150 self-help home ownership residences and over 1,350 affordable rental units in San Luis Obispo, SantaBarbara, and Ventura counties. For 40 years, the non-profit organization has not only developed affordable housing in over 30 cities and communities but has also provided community facilities, supportive housing programs, financial education, and youth after-school education--programs that foster greater self-sufficiency for low-income households, seniors, the formerly homeless, and special needs households.
NeighborWorks network of 235 independent, community-based nonprofits, like Peoples' Self-Help Housing, serve more than 4,500 communities nationwide. Head-quartered in Washington, DC, NeighborWorks America operates through a national office and eight regional field offices.
Organizations that comprise the NeighborWorks Network must meet stringent membership criteria and undergo rigorous reviews upon acceptance and every year thereafter to ensure they are delivering the highest-quality and most efficient and effective services to lower-income communities nationwide. NeighborWorks is the nation's top trainer for housing and community development professionals, and its counseling certification is recognized by HUD as setting industry-wide standards for the housing industry.
In 2009, NeighborWorks organizations generated $3.9 billion in public and private investments and helped more than 300,000 low- and moderate income families purchase or improve their homes or secure safe, decent rental housing. It works with several affiliated capital corporations to build partnerships, develop loan products and support financing vehicles that further expand affordable housing opportunities nationwide. NeighborWorks America is a nationally recognized leader in the fight against foreclosures.
