MORE HOUSING FOR DOWNTOWN WORKERS ON THE WAY

Peoples' Self-Help Housing holds ceremonial ground-breaking for new apartments

Santa Barbara, CA, February 22, 2007—Casas las Granadas will provide 12 new, permanently affordable one-bedroom rental units set aside for “downtown workers”. The development will especially benefit those tenants who may not have a car for their transportation needs. Of the 12 apartments, ranging from 485 to 575 square feet, 8 units will be for households with incomes at 60% area median income (AMI) and 4 units for those at 50% AMI. At these two income levels, the rents are projected to range between $560 and $680.

Adding to the appeal of low rents is the development’s convenient location; near Anacapa at 21 E. Anapamu. Casas las Granadas is located across from the Santa Barbara public library, adjacent to the County Courthouse, only ½ block from State Street and in walking distance to major transportation. Casas las Granadas was designed to complement the downtown street scape by featuring many Spanish style architectural elements.

“With so many of our downtown workforce having to commute from surrounding areas, bringing more affordable housing to downtown for low and middle income workers is vital to a maintain a vibrant City core,” said Jeanette Duncan, Executive Director, Peoples’ Self-Help Housing.

“Our hope is that Casas las Granadas will be a shining example of infill housing which demonstrates how the critical need for more affordable downtown housing can be addressed in many communities along the Central Coast, using creative solutions and innovative partnerships,” added Duncan.

Casas las Granadas is scheduled for completion in the winter of 2007.
